Attention Gardeners!
There is a wonderful Montana Master Gardener (http://helenagardens.us4.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=3360ec23368a138bea764d654&id=76e1b022d1&e=c68c994898) celebration being planned in Great Falls, Thursday, September 29 - Saturday, October 1. Attached is the tentative schedule.
We have a feeling a lot of good garden networking and discussions will happen!

** Gardening Tip
------------------------------------------------------------

**
------------------------------------------------------------
If you suspect herbicide residual in your soil or compost, you can do a simple bio-assay to confirm. This would be good to do prior to purchasing soil and soil amendments. Can you tell a difference in the plants below?

** Community Sharing::6th Ward Garden Park Events
------------------------------------------------------------

**
------------------------------------------------------------
Call Chris Stockwell, 406-465-0706 for more information or to see what this Garden Park (http://helenagardens.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3360ec23368a138bea764d654&id=2ecf591b63&e=c68c994898) is all about!
* Tuesday, 8/16, 5:30 pm at Gardenwerks. Join us for a training by Mike Hiel of Gardenwerks in how to put emitters into drip irrigation.
* Saturday, 8/20, 9am to noon. Herb planting party, 6th Ward Garden Park. Plant for the Kids and add some herbs (not just cooking herbs, but small non-woody plants) to the Eco-Orchard. Caroline Wallace and Jennifer Davis designed the patch and assist planting. Volunteers will also begin to add the irrigation.
* Learn more about how drip is set up at the park on 8/20. If you are just starting, we will show you how. We will be drip irrigating herbs in the Kid's Patch and Eco-orchard later Saturday morning and Monday, 8/22 at 6:00 pm to finish anything that needs to be finished. We need to set up a team of drip irrigators. If you want to learn drip irrigation and/or can lend a hand as we expand our drip to more and more plants, please call Chris.

** HCG Board and Garden Manager Potluck
------------------------------------------------------------

**
------------------------------------------------------------
On a warm Sunday afternoon, Board members, committee members and and Garden Managers got together for a potluck. It was a wonderful excuse to "talk shop" about our gardens, and meet family members who often help out behind the scenes. Thanks Kim and Stuart Howard for hosting this!

** How is your Garden Growing: Featuring Janet Street
------------------------------------------------------------
July brought another volunteer workday with Apogee Adventures (http://helenagardens.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3360ec23368a138bea764d654&id=eb2257d72e&e=c68c994898) (a cycling group). They helped weed and do miscellaneous tasks at Janet St. before biking away the next day towards Glacier!

** Volunteer Groups in Action!
------------------------------------------------------------
Last weekend AmeriCorps (http://helenagardens.us4.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=3360ec23368a138bea764d654&id=d447beb13d&e=c68c994898) NCCC-FEMA Corps members helped out at Bausch Gardens. These young adults were checking out the disaster shelters, tornado shelters and other emergency services in Helena.
For their Independent Service Project, they came out on a Sunday and weeded the Food Share beds as well as turned compost and hauled some trash away. There efforts are a large part of what keeps the garden looking the way it does.
Thank you for your hard work!

** Compost reminder
------------------------------------------------------------

>From Ryan at Bausch Garden (but a good reminder to us all!)
Just a friendly reminder to folks to keep weeds out of the compost. We have had a few instances this summer where large stacks of weeds were placed in the compost and this will not help us out in the future if we want to keep the compost weed free. Please continue to use the contractor garbage bags and place full bags of weeds behind the shed for now. As for other compost donations please keep em coming, remember to break down larger items like broccoli stalk or corn cobs as these will take several seasons to decompose otherwise.

** Go Away Gophers!
------------------------------------------------------------
A few of you may be interested in this workshop, limited to 20 people; lunch is included
and everyone gets a gopher trap.
The workshop will cover integrated management approaches to voles, pocket gophers and ground squirrels; looking at different baits, traps, fumigants, etc. The entire workshop will be outside and hands-on. Call Extension Agent Brent Sarchet (406) 447-8346 if you have any questions, or to register!

** Nursery pots to give away
------------------------------------------------------------
HCG received a phone call from a local gardener who has an excess of terra cotta, peat and plastic pots, and trays (from nurseries). They are multiple sizes, but mostly small.
If you're interested shoot a message to grzmen at msn.com (mailto:Hi Everyone, > I thought a few of you may be interested in this workshop (registration > form attached).
