On a hot, 90 degree summer day in Kalispell, kids and families start arriving at Woodland Park for a free lunch. But this day is a little different because today is the first Summer Food Service Program celebration to happen in Kalispell.
With only 17% of kids who regularly get free or reduced price lunches during the school year participating in the Summer Food Service Program in Montana, MT No Kid Hungry planned a fun day of activities, speakers, and lots of media coverage to raise awareness of this wonderful program for kids during the summertime. Kids and families file in and dance Zumbatomic alongside live fruit, get their face painted, plant their very own edible flower, get to watch and learn juggling, play water games, and get to meet the Kalispell firemen and use the fire hose! Activities aren't the only hit, Dan Zorn, the Vice-Superintendent of Kalispell Public Schools arrives early and stays late to speak to the importance of the program and informs everyone on the summer meals sites that are located in Kalispell. Fun is had by all, and the event ends up being a success with lots of promotion on TV, Montana Public Radio, and the newspaper.
In Kalispell this summer there are 4 summer meal sites: Elrod School, Flathead High, Meadow Manor Mobile Home Court, and Woodland Park. To find out more information on meals being served, text "Lunch" to 877-877 or visit the Summer Food Map at www.mfbn.org/summerfoodmt<http://www.mfbn.org/summerfoodmt>.
In addition to Kalispell, Summer Food kick off events took place at Helena, Missoula and Billings. Each event was a hit and has proven to be drawing more children in from the community to enjoy a free lunch and/or breakfast in a safe, fun environment.
