*October 5:  Open Our Perspectives of Cooperatives in Food Systems*

**(Invited) Kathleen Merrigan, U.S. Department of Agriculture Deputy
Secretary *
As described by TIME when Merrigan was named one of the top 100 most
influential people for 2010, “Merrigan brings an unusually green viewpoint
to the USDA.”  Merrigan will provide insight of the role of cooperatives in
USDA initiatives to create new economic opportunities by better connecting
consumers with local producers.

*The Natural Alliance of Communities & Co-ops*
Community representatives provide fresh and local perspectives on the role
of co-ops.

*The Contributions of Cooperatives to Economic Development through Food
*Speaker: Ken Meter, Crossroads Resource Center*
Cooperatives benefit local economies by supporting job creation, increasing
tax revenue, and boosting tourism, as well as by keeping a greater share of
local dollars in the community. This session will help participants
understand the impacts of cooperatives and their contributions to stronger
local economies.

*Growing Diversified Food Economies through the Cooperative Model*
A panel discusses the unique opportunities that a cooperative business
model can bring to the production, marketing, financing, and consumer
support of local and regional foods.

*October 6:  Cultivating Cooperatives in our Communities*

Fresh perspectives and insights will engage you to consider the potential
of cooperatives.  Conversations will be highly interactive and focused,
using the World Café conference format and facilitated as a Strategic
Seminar by members of the CDS Consulting Co-op.
